Week #66

Hola Familia!

First off, I got the package from Mar Del Plata! We had a leadership conference and all of the leaders come to Bahía Blanca to listen to President Cifuentes. I learned a lot from him. He truly stresses the importance of love and service. We even had the opportunity to have him speak in our ward on Sunday and it was incredible. He asked us all why we were here at church. He told us the reasons why he was there. He said two simple things- 1.Eternal Families 2. Service. He talked about how we are all one big family and how God´s plan is that ALL of us return to His presence. That´s where the service comes in. We must serve all of God´s children so that ALL of us can return to God´s presence. That´s what I want- I want to be able to return to God´s presence with ALL of my family and friends.

Unfortunately, Vitelli started smoking again and this time he told us that he doesn´t want to learn more. We left him with our testimony and a good friendship, and then we put him in the area book. Right now he doesn´t want to change, but in the near future he will be more prepared. It´s hard to let go of investigadors, but the gift of agency is real and God has given it to each and every one of us. We´re teaching a few people that are amazing! Mirta is going to get baptized one of these next few weeks. Please pray for her so that she´ll be able to keep progressing. We also found a family (The Cuestas Family) that are listening to us because they feel something special about us. We had a great lesson with them on Saturday, but they couldn´t come to church because of problems with work. Pray for them so that they can make it to General Conference and watch it with us. I´ll keep you updated on the progress of them.

For P-Day, we had a zone P-day and we went to a place called Monte Hermoso. It´s so beautiful. It´s on the cost and it´s a little city that reminds me a lot of downtown Park City. I took a lot of pictures, but I´m not going to send them this week because I don´t have too much confidence in these computers here in Monte Hermoso. I don´t want to get a virus and lose everything hahah. Look Monte Hermoso up on the internet, it´s an hour outside of the city of Bahía Blanca. President Cifuentes encouraged us to have these P-days as zones to help the missionaries feel like part of a family and to relax and have fun. We had a great time playing volleyball on the beach. It was windy so there was literally NOBODY. We had a great time!

Week #65

Hola Familia!

This week was incredible and I learned a few things about the power of the Spirit in this great work. Two people came to church this week!- Vitelli and Mirta. First off with Vitelli, unfortunately, he was tempted and he smoked a cigarrette and drank a little. He was disappointed and very discouraged. He took down all the encouraging posters that we put in his house and told us that he didn´t think that he could do it anymore. I learned this week just how encouraging the Spirit is. We testified to Vitelli just how much the Lord loves him and how he suffers every time he picks up a cigarette to smoke one. I felt the Spirit encourage Vitelli and let him know that he truly could overcome this addiction in his life. He pulled out the pack of cigarettes that he had in his pocket and gave us the rest and told us that he wanted to stop for good. We told him that he can´t do it alone and that he NEEDS the help of God. He NEEDS to come to Church so that he has strength throughout the week to overcome temptations. He came to Church, and I know that the Lord will bless him for that. Please keep praying for Vitelli. He can do it!

We talked to Mirta in the Street a few weeks ago, but she never was able to come to Church. We visited her on Tuesday with a member and I know that she was ready to feel the Spirit in this momento. We taught her about baptism and she told us (even though she´s 70 years old and fear of water) that she wants to get baptized. She said, “I don´t know what it is, but I feel something in my heart that is telling me ´Do It!´” We taught her that that was the Spirit and that God is talking to her. Every time we had the chance to share a scripture with her during the week, she always ended up crying and telling us how much she wants to follow God and be clean. She seriously is very sensitive to the Holy Spirit.  The best was during Sacrament Meeting. I sat down by her and we just sat listening to the prelude music in the chapel. She looked at me and asked me if it was weird that she feels like crying when she hears this music. I took the opportunity to share with her that she was feeling the Spirit and that she was going to feel this feeling during all of the meetings. I told her that the feeling was good and that it was from God. She felt this feeling even stronger during the Sacrament. When the Sacrament started, she grabbed her chest and she started breathing a little harder, sighed, then said “O Dios”. From what I could tell from the situation, she was feeling a burning in her bosom. (Either that or she was having a small heart attack haha) The Spirit was incredibly strong and I began to think about the POWER the Spirit has in our lives. I began to think just how strong the Spirit especially when someone isn´t used to feeling it in their lives. When they recognize the Spirit for the first time, it´s overpowering. For me, I´ve always been surrounded by the Spirit and I received the gift of the Spirit at 8 years old. I´ve felt it powerfully in my life, but I´ve always known that it was a blessing from God. I thought, for those who don´t know, it´s an odd feeling, one you can´t explain, but one that you want with you forever.

How many times have I taken the influence and power of the Spirit for granted in my life? When God blesses us in this way, the best way we can thank Him is to recognize the Spirit and share it with others. The Lord´s mercy is over all of us and He wants to bless us with His Spirit.

Week #64

Hola Familia!

I absolutely LOVED this week because it was full of miracles. I made a lot of personal goals and I´m striving to be able to achieve them. It all started with the conference with Elder Teixeira. It was an inspired meeting and I learned a lot from the Spirit and what I must do to better serve the Lord. One of the themes of this conference was how we can recognize the Spirit in our lives and the the power of prayer. I made goals concerning both of those themes and I want to share with you a few stories and experiences from this week. President Cifuentes challenged each of us to carry a Little notebook around with us to write down moments when we recognize the Spirit during the day. I did it this week and I saw many miracles.

First off, I made the goal to teach simpler and with more power. We were teaching Vitelli and he has a hard time remembering what we teach him. Elder Dement and I decided to teach him like an 8 year old kid. We took an entire lesson to simply tell him that he has a Heavenly Father that loves him, that Jesus Christ is his Savior and Redeemer, and that the Holy Ghost is a guide to help him choose the right. I testified to him as if I were speaking to an 8 year old of the truths that I had learned from Primary. I truly recognized the presence of the Spirit in the lesson and as I pondered about the lesson that night writing in my journal, I realized that the Spirit can´t testify if people don´t understand. But when language is simple and pure, the Spirit can testify of simple truths that have and will always be true. It was a cool experience to recognize the Spirit in that way. The Spirit has the ability to testify to anyone and everyone.

I also learned that you can receive inspirations through the Spirit through other people (in this example, the members of the Church). On Friday a member of the Relief Society Presidency called us and told us that a young family that was baptized about 6 months ago was having troubles in their home and contentions were arising to the point of being seperated. We received the call and acted without hesitation. Before entering the home, Elder Dement and I said a prayer together to know what to say to this family. We entered the home and we knew that something was wrong, we could literally feel the contention. I started by saying a prayer and I pleaded for the Spirit of love would feel their home and that they could feel the love that the Savior has for them. As the prayer ended, we realized that the mother of the family was crying and I knew that the Lord had sent us His Spirit. We testified of temples and how families are most important in God´s plan. I shared my personal experience of the love that I felt when I went through the temple and hugged my family in the Celestial Room- there truly wasn´t a sweeter feeling of the Spirit. The Spirit of contention left the room and the father of the family said the closing prayer. And he prayed for the ability to be more humble. I left that house knowing that I had followed the Spirit with my companion and we had recognized it through the leadership in the Church.

I had many other experiences this week where I recognized the power of the Spirit in our labors. The only thing that I can say is that this week was FULL of miracles. Being an instrument in the hand of the Lord is the greatest blessing the Lord gives us when we give our will to Him. I challenge everyone at home to write down the moments throughout the day when you recognize the Spirit and I promise you that you will recognize the power of God more in your life. I also promise you that the Lord will be more willing to bless you with His Spirit as you recognize His influence in your life.

Week #63

Hola Familia!

I´m sitting here reading this letter amazed as I read the experience about everyone with Elder Andersen. I´m a little jealous that I wasn´t there but I don´t think there is any other place in the world where I would want to be right now- on the mission. And even more than that, I know that all of you and Elder Andersen wouldn´t want anything else. So I´m extremely happy, and hopefully one day I can meet Elder Andersen personally. I´m pretty excited for this week because Elder Texiera is going to come (a member of the Seventy) and he´s going to speak to us as a mission. I´m extremely excited about that! The heat here is starting to come. We didn´t have much of a winter, so I´m sure this summer is going to be brutal, but at least I´m not in Brazil or something haha.

I have a few experiences that I want to share from this week. First, an experience with an investigator and second with a personal experience. We are teaching an investigator named Vitelli. He´s about 70 years old and he is very humble and always listens to us. He stopped listening to the missionaries awhile back because he struggles with smoking and he felt like he would never be able to overcome it. We brought a plan to his help to help him stop smoking. He is very willing to stop, but he struggles with the addiction. He told us to leave him one more cigarette so he could smoke one more. We left the cigarette on the table and we started cleaning the house a little. Taking away cigarettes and cleaning things that smell like smoke. The program consists of drinking a lot of juice and eating vitamin C and basically taking yourself from any addiction and temptation. We found a box of wine in his fridge and he said he bought it yesterday but that he didn´t want to drink anymore either. We invited him to pour the whole box down the sink- and he did it with ease. We even took a picture with him doing it haha. We taught him the importance of trusting in the Lord and praying often for guidance. He was insistent that we left the last cigarette, but while we were talking, Elder Dement and I hid the cigarette from the table. We invited him to say a prayer asking for help and he asked the Lord that he will be able to stop smoking. He said amen and said " I know that you guys took the last cigarette, but I don´t even want to smoke it anymore" It was a miracle. We left him, went to the store and bought some air freshener, juice, and air cleaner to give him so that he could take away some of the temptation. The next day he told us that he hadn´t smoked, nor drank (even though he ate an asado- and everyone and their dog drinks wine with asado haha) It was quite the experience. We´re still working with him so I hope he´s strong. Keep him in your prayers!

The next experience was personal and it took place during the Sacrament. I relearned yesterday what I have known all of my life, but this time I understood the Atonement at a deeper level. I realized that Jesus Christ always had his agency and at any moment that he decided to use his agency to do something against the will of God, the whole plan that God created would have been destroyed. The Savior didn´t have to suffer the Atonement if He didn´t want to. He CHOSE to. And even though He chose to suffer, He had NO idea how it would feel before he did it. When he accepted to be the Savior of the world, he didn´t have a body, or in other words, he didn´t know what it was like to have bodily and mortal pains. He accepted and he fulfilled. What amazes me is that our Heavenly Father trusted completely in His Son Jesus Christ. All of His plan depended on His Son. I began to realize if there was something in my life where I wasn´t completely trusting in the Savior. These things need to be changed completely and NOW. If our Heavenly Father trusted COMPLETELY in Jesus Christ, what keeps us (imperfect beings) to put our complete trust in Him. I know that He IS the Savior of the world. He DID do everything that was asked of Him. I invite everyone and myself to put more trust in our Savior Jesus Christ. I promise that He will help us and He will lift us up. He lives.

Week # 62

Hola Familia!

Thanks for the update on the family! I love hearing about everyone and how everyone is doing. I especially like hearing about all the missionaries that are entering the MTC and the mission field. Get ready for the greatest experiences of your life. Experiences that will change you forever. I have learned so many things here and I´m truly enjoying working in the Lord´s work.

Right now I´m in Bahía Blanca in an area called General Arias. I´m with Elder Dement who is from Texas and has been out on the mission field for one transfer longer than me. I´m loving every minute with him. He works extremely hard and he is always willing to learn. I´ll send you a picture of us. I think the reason that we´re such good friends and we work well together is because he reminds of me Michael Holland. He has the same sense of humor and he does things that remind me of Mike. We laugh a lot and have a good time working hard. I´m liking the area a lot. We live in a small apartment with 3 other Elders, so it´s pretty fun. I couldn´t get to know the ward very well this week because we had a conference that I´m going to explain later in this letter. I´m extremely happy to be where I am right now and I´m truly enjoying the life as a missionary.

All of Argentina, Uruguay, and Paraguay had a conference (that was announced only one week ago) and we got to listen to Elder Cook, Elder Hales, and other leaders of the church. They talked about the Sabbath Day and how we must keep it with more holiness. They also talked and stressed about the importance of serving a mission. They repeated Pres. Monson´s words that every worthy and able young man should serve a mission. It is a Priesthood responsibility. They were stressing the importance of missions because they would like to see more missionaries from these three countries. The work here is growing and it is incredible to see.

This week I had an experience that strengthened my testimony. I was reading in the morning when Joseph Smith saw God the Father and His Son Jesus Christ. I started to ask myself if this actually happened. I had the impression to pray in this moment and ask God if it were true. I prayed and I felt peace, but my answer came later on in the day. Before lunch, Elder Dement and I knocked on a door and a man answered and we started testifying of the Restoration of the gospel of Jesus Christ. We talked about Joseph Smith and we testified of the First Vision and the Book of Mormon. Unfortunately, these people didn´t accept the message and had many doubts about prophets and even told us that they knew a woman prophet. We testified with power and authority that Thomas S. Monson is the prophet of God today on the earth and that the Lord has called 12 apostles as he had in the past. I walked away from that moment knowing that the Lord had answered my prayer from that morning. Joseph Smith truly did see Heavenly Father and Jesus Christ. It´s true, I have no doubt about it. The gospel of Jesus Christ was restored through Joseph Smith and the Book of Mormon is the proof of that. I know that this message is true and I want everyone to know it too.

Week #61

Hola Familia!

I know you probably won´t believe it, but I got transferred again..... to a different Area. It was actually really surprising. But I´m getting pretty good at packing my suit cases and changing areas. Although I didn´t like it at all before the mission (and I still don´t like it a lot) but I´m getting pretty good at adjusting to change. I´m still serving here in Bahía Blanca in an area called General Arias. It´s a bigger ward and a huge area. I´m really excited! I´m with Elder Dement from Texas. I know him a little from leadership meetings and I´m extremely excited to work with him. He´s an extremely hard worker and I know that we´re going to get along well.

These last few days, I´ve been thinking about what the Lord wants me to learn with all this change in the mission. I mean in one year, I have had 10 companions and 6 areas. I´ve had to get used to working with many different personalities, I´ve had to learn many different areas, I´ve had to live in my different places, and I´ve gotten to know many different people. And although changing often has been one of the biggest trials for me, it has also been one of the biggest blessings. I have learned SO much from each and every one of my companions and my areas. I´ve grown so close to many members here in Argentina. And as I was sitting in Sacrament Meeting yesterday, I realized how much that I desire to see all of these members (in all of my areas) in the Celestial Kingdom one day. Through all of this change, the Lord has capacitated me to love many more people and many different types of people. It has been a great blessing in my life and a trial and challenge that I´m still willing to accept.

I truly believe with all of my heart that this is the Lord´s work. He directs the work completely through a beloved prophet, even Thomas S. Monson. We are so blessed to have prophets and apostles who guide us through the counsel of our Savior. The Savior also directs Mission Presidents because this is His work. I´ve learned countless things here on the mission and the Lord keeps teaching me more every day.

Week #60

Hola Familia!

Haha to answer the question about the cigarettes and smoking. They are right, everyone smokes here. And let me tell you, I´m pretty sure I´ve smoked a pack myself from all of the second hand smoke haha. I used to get brutal headaches from smoke, but it´s not as bad now- blessings from being a missionary. But the worst is when we´re in a home and they are smoking and you can actually see the smoke in the air... I usually hold my breath and take quick breaths through my shirt. When we leave those homes, I usually try to breath out all of the smokes from my lungs haha. I know it doesn´t work, but it does in my mind.

This week was incredible and I learned a lot about the opportunities that the Lord gives us as missionaries and members of the Church to help prepare people to receive the gospel. The Lord always has a way of softening peoples hearts, and sometimes this process happens through our actions. I have three experiences that stuck out to me this week.

1. We got our hair cut on Thursday. I went in the morning and then we went in the afternoon for Elder Brown. When we were there in the morning, I asked the hair stylist about his son that was in a picture and we got talking about his family. We talked about the mission and what we do. Anyways, when we went back in the afternoon, we got talking again and he asked us out of the blue what happens after this life. We started talking about the resurrection and the plan of salvation. He told us that his son had died 3 months ago and that he was initially mad at God. But now he just wants to have peace and comfort knowing where his son is. We taught him a little bit, gave him a pamphlet, and showed him where he could find more answers online. It was a testimony that the Lord prepares the hearts of his children in the right moments.

2. We got home from church, and on our door the neighbor (and owner of the home that we rent) had invited us to go over to their home for lunch. It was awesome. We got their and all of their family was visiting them. There was about 20 people. We had an asado, empenadas, potatoes, fruit salad, and we talked a lot to them. They offered us wine and we told them that we were okay with water. We talked about why we do the things we do, what we do as missionaries, about the language (a few of them spoke english) about sports (especially the NBA and Manu Ginobli- he´s from Bahía Blanca), and about the United States. The Spirit kept telling me to smile, to laugh, to be happy, and to show them by example who we were. When we finished eating, I asked if it would be okay to share something with them. I didn´t share scriptures or anything, but I shared my simple, but strong testimony of my Savior Jesus Christ. That He lives and we can have eternal families because of Him. It was an incredible experience to feel the Spirit and to know that we love our Savior Jesus Christ. One of them even said afterwards (who was Catholic) that we focus a lot on Jesus Christ in our Church. I was glad that the Spirit bore witness of that to him. We left them with a prayer. It was an experience that the Lord blessed us with.

3.And the same Sunday, we were walking and we saw a young couple digging out weeds on a piece of land that they had just bought. They were preparing it to build there house there. We stopped, grabbed the extra shovels and started helping them. As we helped them, they asked us a lot of questions and we were able to share many things with them. In a few years they will move here to Cerri and I hope that they are prepared to receive the fullness of the gospel. They were so amazed and grateful, that they asked if they could take a selfie with us haha because they wanted to tell their friends.

I know that the Lord has many ways of preparing His children to receive His gospel. I challenge each of you to pray for opportunities and ways to help people strengthen their faith in Jesus Christ. If we are willing, I promise that the Lord will give us opportunities.
